Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

A fantastic opportunity has become available in our MGP Applied Science Design Group for aSenior Mechanical Design Engineer.

Reporting to the Lead Design Engineer, the successful candidate will take full ownership and responsibility for a variety of complex engineering projects. Using an analytical approach alongside a high attention to detail to engineering design, they will take ownership of designing and developing mechanical, composite, and hydraulic systems, from concept through to design, testing, and implementation onto the car.

The Applied Science department plays a key role in delivering high‑performance engineering outside of F1, contributing to a wide range of advanced vehicle and design programmes. The work is diverse and technically demanding, involving both engineering and design challenges depending on the needs of each development project. Although the core focus is on non‑F1 vehicle platforms, there are also opportunities to become involved in other high‑performance, non‑F1 initiatives across the wider organisation.

We’re interested in speaking with engineers who have experience in, or the ambition to move into, high‑performance engineering, and who are excited by the idea of working on cutting‑edge, fast‑paced programmes.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and development of a variety of mechanical, composite, and hydraulic systems on the car and own the integration of these components into the overall car package.
• Mass tracking predictions on a timely basis.
• Collaboration with the structural team for part optimisation, with the use of Catia FEA to support your own designs.
• Delivery of innovative design solutions that support the team's goal to maximise performance and minimise mass.
• Working in synergy with other departments, producing optimised design solutions to achieve the highest levels of performance and reliability.
• Generation of 3D models, assemblies and 2D drawings, including the definition and documentation of manufacturing information.
• Support in the definition and management of performance and reliability lab testing programs for relevant designs & projects.
• Reliability management of assigned systems throughout component life cycle, and in support of the team’s reliability function.
• Close collaboration with internal and external manufacturing departments to ensure fully integrated designs achieving optimal car performance.
• Understand and drive cost effective design solutions.
• Other tasks and projects as required to achieve the overall Applied Science objectives

Essential skills and experience

• Mechanical, automotive, or aeronautical degree (2:1 minimum grade) or similar.
• Proven in-depth understanding of mechanical design and its application with a solid understanding and appreciation of engineering first principles.
• A detailed knowledge of modern materials and manufacturing processes.
• Experience of Catia V5/3DX solid modelling and surfacing design and kinematics would be beneficial.
• Experience in suspension system design and K&C (Kinematics and Compliance) analysis would be advantageous.
• Use of finite element analysis tool and shape optimisation (ideally with Catia V5/3DX packages) alongside hand calculation methodologies to produce reliable and optimised designs is a significant benefit.
• Excellent communication and collaborative skills to ensure cross departmental integration.
• High attention to detail and the ability to work under limited supervision to tight deadlines.
